JD Crowe, Doc Watson, and the Infamous Stringdusters on The Best of Pickin

Tune in for this week's Best of Pickin with a great blend of both traditional and progressive bluegrass music. We'll hear from Old Crow Medicine Show, Code Blue, Larry Rice, JD Crowe, and plenty of others. JD Crowe started his career as a Sunny Mountain Boy with Jimmy Martin. He later formed his own band and in the 70s is credited with forging a new path for Bluegrass music when he teamed with Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Bobby Slone, and Jerry Douglas for the ground breaking Rounder 0044 release that in 2024 was selected to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, and/or aesthetically significant. Crowe would continue recording including the Lefty's Old Guitar release that was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2007. Also, music from Donna the Buffalo- they just played Merlefest as well as tracks from Cherryholmes, Blue Highway, Joe Ely, Doc Watson and plenty of others. Why head out on a Friday night? There's great music on The Best of Pickin- beginning at 10 pm here on 89.5

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
