The Metropolitan Opera's 2024–25 season continues this Saturday, May 10, with a special broadcast chosen directly by the audience. This year, listeners voted for the legendary 1966 performance of Puccini’s “Turandot,” featuring two operatic icons whose powerful pairing left audiences in awe: Birgit Nilsson and Franco Corelli.
The Swedish soprano stars as the icy princess determined never to belong to any man, while Italian tenor Franco Corelli takes on the role of Calàf, the prince who is just as determined to win her heart. The cast also includes soprano Mirella Freni as the devoted servant Liù and bass Bonaldo Giaiotti as Timur, the exiled king of Tartary. A young Zubin Mehta conducts the Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra in this unforgettable, historic performance.
