Pickin: Remembering David Davis

Pickin on WHRV fondly remembers David Davis on this week's program. Davis, who passed away on September 15th, was considered one of the foremost mandolin players in traditional Bluegrass Music. His uncle, Cleo Davis was an original Bluegrass Boy with Bill Monroe. Davis took over the Warrior River Boys in 1984 and recorded 9 albums, including the 2018 release " Didn't He Ramble: Songs of Charlie Poole." Davis was inducted into the Alabama Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Americas' Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame. Davis and the Warrior River Boys were considered one of the best Bluegrass groups continuing the tradition of authentic sound of Bluegrass. Tune in Sunday night at 7 for two hours of fine Bluegrass.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
