Celebrate Juneteenth with Another View

another view 2018

Bring your lunch, or purchase some delicious food from one of the food trucks that will be in the WHRO Public Media parking lot, and join us for our 2024 celebration of Juneteenth! You can listen to Another View live, and perhaps even be interviewed by producer Lisa Godley.

Juneteenth is the national commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans after the Civil War. The very first commemoration was held in Texas on June 19, 1865. Another View will celebrate this historic holiday on this Thursday, June 13.

Hampton Storytellers Jay Johnson and Sheila Arnold will regale us with stories about Juneteenth. Historian Harvey Bakari will share some little known Black history facts. And we will have a great time!

So join us live for lunch, or hang out with us on the radio on the next Another View, Thursday, June 13 at noon on 89.5 WHRV-FM or at whrv.org.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
