After working with an outside procucer for her past two albums, Annie Clark a.k.a. St. Vincent goes it alone on her new album “All Born Screaming.” The result is a thrill ride of psychedelic, dystopian experimentation that is all hers.
With pulsating synths, propusive rhthms and her own skittery guitar work she lays out a vision of how she sees the world in all it’s oblivious danger. Many of the songs are about the imminent collapse of society and how she is the only one standing in the way of it’s demise.
When Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Halll of Fame, Clark filled in for Kurt Cobain during the live performance and that collaboration obviously inspired Dave Grohl to join on a couple of tracks, replacing drum machines with his vicious style, so perfect for this album.
There’s a lot going on in each of the songs on St. Vincent’s “All Born Screaming.” Ideas are piled on top of each other bringing about a fierce chemistry and Clark somehow finds a way to bring it all under control. It’s a giant step forward for her always challenging music.
