'Pickin' & 'Acoustic Highway' Preview the Annual Merlefest

This week,  Pickin' on WHRV and the Acoustic Highway previews the annual Merlefest gathering happening the weekend of April 28 th. Founded in 1988 by Doc Watson, the festival regularly draws crowds consistently exceeding 75,000.   This year’s line-up includes the legendary Peter Rowan who began his career as a Bluegrass Boy with Bill Monroe in the 1960s.  Also featured is Dom Flemons who was a part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, who won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in 2010. We’ll also hear from Donna the Buffalo, Jim Lauderdale, The Kruger Brothers, and former Norfolk resident Roy Bookbinder, who regularly has returned to the region to perform. He was a part of the expansive folk scene in the area in the early 1960s.  Merlefest is an annual rite of spring and has become a mecca for lovers of Bluegrass and Acoustic Music.
