According to Feeding America, Virginia’s food insecurity rate is about 12%.
That means just over 1 million households in the state can’t access enough food because they don’t have enough money or lack other resources.
The recent federal government shutdown, which led to an unprecedented pause in SNAP benefits, and the Trump Administration’s ongoing cuts to federal programs have made it harder for individuals to afford food and put a strain on charitable organizations that usually help those in need.
Still, there are groups in Hampton Roads providing the main course for Thanksgiving this year, and some will even do the cooking and deliver.
