As you see from our cover story, in this month’s issue we are highlighting our Radio and News staff. These dedicated folks have been working hard to keep things running smoothly during the pandemic.
While many of our employees are working from home, members of these teams have continued to work at the station making sure we are able to bring you the latest news, information, music and arts programs that you enjoy. I hope you will take a moment to read about them and get to know them a little better.
Many of you tuned in for our educational program VA TV Classroom that presented teachers teaching content for students in grades K–10. We’ve decided to re-air this series on WHRO TV 15 throughout the summer. Tune in for a refresher or to catch up on any lessons you missed. Much of this content is also archived in our digital learning library, eMediaVA. Visit emediava.org to search for the topics and grade levels that interest you most. We will also have a new season of VA TV Classroom coming in the fall—stay tuned!
In addition to this content for your children, we have some exciting summer programs lined up that the whole family will enjoy. This year marks 100 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment, and we’ll be sharing the stories of some of the women who worked so hard to bring it about. The upcoming film The Vote (July 6–7, 9 p.m.), from American Experience, tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote. Unladylike2020 (July 10, 9 p.m.), from American Masters, explores the stories of pioneering women in American politics. And, of course, we will celebrate America’s 244th birthday with A Capitol Fourth 2020 on July 4 at 8 p.m.
As our community gets back to (a new) “normal” and more things open up, I’d like to thank you for your generous support during these unprecedented times. We’ve heard from so many of you during this time about how you rely on WHRO Public Media for news, entertainment and information—and it is only through your contributions that any of it is possible. Many of you donated in support of our TV and radio pledge drives last month. Thank you! If you didn’t get a chance to give, or you’d like to send an additional gift, donating online is a quick and easy way. Visit us at whro.org/donate
Lastly, I’m excited to announce that work on our Wall of Faces initiative reached a new milestone—we’ve located the last missing photo! This project’s goal was to find photos for all 1,306 Virginia Veterans listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. You can read more about it at whro.org/walloffaces
Thank you to everyone who helped us locate photos!
Stay safe, stay cool and have a great summer!
