From the CEO - October 2019

This year’s event will be held October 5. Each year, this festival brings exciting activities and exhibits for families, and WHRO’s booth is always a popular stop for both children and parents. Join us to meet a couple well-known PBS characters. Learn more at whro.org/events

The Children’s Festival is also a great opportunity to learn about all the work we do in the realm of early childhood education. WHRO has been providing early childhood educational services in Hampton Roads for more than 50 years. Each year our Literacy and STEM Vans visit more than 100 schools, libraries, and community centers to promote reading and technology skills and give away thousands of books. Throughout the year we also offer reading and coding camps for young learners as well as professional development workshops for teachers looking to implement new technology in their classrooms. We are excited to continue offering these and other resources to the students and educators in our community.

We have a great lineup of entertaining and educational programs for you on TV this month. Press on Masterpiece is a six-part series set in the world of newspapers in London and explores the current, turbulent media landscape and the ethical dilemmas that journalists and editors face each day. It begins on October 6 at 10 p.m. Retro Report on PBS is a one-hour series hosted by journalist Celeste Headlee and artist Masud Olufani and features New Yorker humorist Andy Borowitz. The series offers a fresh perspective on current headlines, revealing their unknown— and often surprising—connections to the past. It debuts on October 7 & 8 at 9 p.m. Lastly, we have a fascinating new series on space that begins October 23. Life from Above uses cameras in space to tell stories of life on our planet from a brand-new perspective, revealing its incredible movements, colors, patterns and just how fast it is changing. And, of course, we will air the annual special that many viewers look forward to, Doctor Madblood, on October 26 at 10 p.m.

Last month wrapped up our fall radio pledge drive. Thank you to everyone who donated! We know you enjoy the news and music that we offer each day. Without your generous support, our work wouldn’t be possible. Thank you, again. Enjoy your fall!
