From the CEO - December 2018

Today, as an adult living in Virginia, I’m happy to say that I experience much less snow and cold as a part of my December, but I still treasure the time that I get to spend with my children and extended family when we all come together for the holidays. I hope you, too, are able to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy quality time with the children in your life throughout the holiday season.

Many of you who are parents know that PBS is a trusted source for kids’ programming. Both our WHRO Kids television channel and our 24/7 livestream online provide a continuous source of children’s content each day. This month is no exception as we have a great lineup of children’s holiday specials scheduled. You can read about those on the next page.

We also have some great radio programs lined up for the holiday season. Whether you enjoy Celtic, country, bluegrass, or classical music, we have something for everyone. On December 23, from 6 p.m. to midnight, WHRV FM will present our holiday program that we feature every year on the Sunday prior to Christmas. It’s the perfect soundtrack as you wrap up your holiday preparations.

Speaking of holiday preparations, we have two great shows about cooking and hosting parties during this holiday season. Those of you who love to entertain will want to tune in for Nigella: At My Table (December 18, 9 p.m.) and Lidia Celebrates America: A Heartland Holiday Feast. Then kick back and relax on Christmas night with the annual Call the Midwife Holiday Special (Tuesday, December 25, 9 p.m.).

As we wrap up the year with this season of giving, I want to extend a huge thank you to each of you for your faithfulness in supporting our work. It is because of your generosity that we are able to do all the things we do. As 2018 comes to close, we have a couple more opportunities for you to show your support. Our winter radio drive is coming up in the second week of December, and we will launch our year-end campaign during the last week of the month. I hope you will take these opportunities to consider including WHRO in your holiday gift giving. Your additional contribution will help us continue to produce engaging and educational programs for Southeast Virginia.

Happy Holidays!
