Hampton Roads voters have a range of races and referendums on their ballots this election season.
Everyone in the state will vote on three proposed constitutional amendments, and some Hampton Roads cities will consider an additional sales tax to fund school construction.
At the local level, some counties are electing town and school boards while cities are considering constitutional officers.
And at the top of the ballot are U.S. congressional races including one of Virginia’s U.S. Senate seats and all U.S. House of Representatives seats.
It’s a lot to remember, and a lot of people to learn about, so WHRO asked candidates about the topics you said you were most interested in to help you.
How we did it:
WHRO asked readers through its newsletter and on social media what questions they had for candidates. Participants were asked to provide location information so their feedback could be matched with their locality.
WHRO looked for common themes in readers’ questions and, when possible, included specific questions as submitted. For congressional races, WHRO worked with its statewide public media partners to send a uniform list of questions.
Candidates’ contact information was taken from the Virginia Department of Elections candidate listings. If it was incorrect or not provided, WHRO used contact information from campaign websites, public information checks or social media.

WHRO lightly edited responses for spelling and grammar so readers could understand candidates, but didn't edit the content of what candidates wrote.
