Welcoming November on The Acoustic Highway

Musician Tret Fure

On this week's Acoustic Highway, we welcome the month of November with music from local artist Tret Fure and her anthem "Roses in November"(and considering it was eighty degrees here yesterday, I'm surprised the bush in my yard has not bloomed..). Also, the mailman cometh, bringing me lots of new releases. We'll hear from the Norfolk duo Wine Dark Sea, The Richmond based Tin Can Fish Band, Rhiannon Giddens, Lyal Strickland, and plenty of others. Strickland is the Missouri based artist who in addition to his music, also is a cattle farmer. His latest album " Shooter of Truth" is his first in a decade and is being hailed as a powerful comeback for the singer-songwriter. Also, music from Wyonna, Beck, and Leslie Waugh. It's a powerful Highway! tune in Sunday night at 9 on 89.5 WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
