A group of K-12 Health and PE teachers from Williamsburg-James City County Schools spent part of their professional development day learning about resources they can use in their classrooms.
Teachers learned the basics of eMediaVA, Virginia’s premier digital media content library for educators and students, providing access to thousands of free, relevant, SOL-aligned digital learning resources. eMediaVA was developed by WHRO Public Media to serve educators statewide.
eMediaVA features content from state and national leaders in educational content like PBS LearningMedia, Library of Congress, National Geographic, Khan Academy, Sesame Workshop, Science Museum of Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg, NASA, and more. Teachers use the online resources to engage and inspire students through videos, audio recordings, images, interactives and labs, lesson ideas, and special collections. All resources are SOL-aligned and cover a variety of subjects.
WHRO Education staff shared a curated collection of learning objects that supported Health and PE standards with the WJCC educators, then provided time for them to explore eMediaVA to find resources that were helpful to them and to ask questions about navigating the site. eMediaVA was a new resource for the majority of teachers that attended the training.
The middle and high school teachers were excited to see trusted resources about mental health, vaping, and nutrition. The elementary teachers mentioned using eMediaVA resources during virtual days.
"It was exciting to see teachers embedding resources from eMediaVA into their lessons for next week!" said Alice Agnew, Manager of Education Resources at WHRO.
Adam Otstot, who set up the training, shared his appreciation in an email following the event. “Thank you so much for your time and for your wonderful presentations! The teachers were really pumped to see all of the resources available to them,” he wrote.
eMediaVa is free for all PreK-12 public, private, and home educators and students in Virginia.
