Every Saturday evening at 8:00 pm on WHRO-FM, Raymond Jones hosts “This just in” and helps you navigate the latest exciting new releases in classical music.
This week, Raymond brings you a particularly glorious performance of Richard Strauss’s ‘”A Hero’s Life” by the Royal Philharmonic, under the inspired baton of Sir Thomas Beecham. Before that, the show opens with Leo Sowerby’s colorful “Pageant of Autumn,” performed by organist Mark Dwyer. Following Beecham’s splendid performance, we turn to an old favorite: Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” performed by the Munich Chamber Orchestra, featuring its instantly recognizable finale. Next, we head to Texas, where the Philharmonie Austin brings Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Symphony No. 5 to life, capturing the drama and grandeur of the late Romantic era. From there, we explore a more intimate musical conversation with the Pacifica Quartet, performing Korngold’s String Quartet No. 1, a work rich in subtle shifts of color and feeling. Finally, two picturesque works take us across the English landscape, from South to North, with Avril Coleridge-Taylor’s serene “Sussex Landscape” and Arnold Rosner’s transcendent “Northern Sketches.”
This Saturday evening at 8:00, tune in to “This Just In” on WHRO-FM for an evening of musical discover, bringing you new worlds of sound alongside beloved classics. You can also listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
