Classic Del McCoury on The Best of Pickin

It's a wonderful blend of traditional and new Bluegrass on this week's Best of Pickin. Hear Del McCoury and his highly acclaimed 1971 album "Livin on the Mountain." The ex-Bluegrass Boy teamed with fiddle player Buddy Spicher and Dick Staber on mandolin on the release that is considered one of his finest. It was reissued by Rebel Records on cd in 1993 and is one of those albums that lovers of the genre must have in their library. Also, music from other traditional artists, including the Bluegrass super group Longview and, The Seldom Scene. We'll hear a bevy of Virginia based musicians including Wine Dark Sea, The Hackensaw Boys, Tin Can Fish Band, and (almost Virginia) Chatham County Line, and The Steep Canyon Rangers. Also, tracks from The Brother's Comatose and their cover of Neal Young's Harvest Moon, as well as alt country rocker Neko Case and her version of the Ernest Tubb classic " Thanks a Lot." Why venture any further than you preferred speaker... Tune in to The Best of Pickin. Friday night 10-12 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
