Every Saturday evening at 8:00 pm on WHRO-FM, host Raymond Jones helps you navigate the latest exciting new releases in classical music on “This just in.”
This week, human feelings take center stage. To open this beautiful evening, host Raymond Jones has lined up for you Handel’s majestic ballet “The Gods Go Abegging,” arranged by Sir Thomas Beecham who leads the Royal Philharmonic. From Raven Records in Richmond comes Francis Pott’s monumental “Introduction, Toccata and Fugue,” performed by organist Sonja Kahler from the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America, Washington DC. Then, we hear Alexander Melnikov playing the elegant Piano Concerto No. 1 by 19th century German composer Emilie Mayer. Then, Lukas Borowitz conducts the Poznan Philharmonic in the sweeping Symphony in d minor by Polish composer Zygmunt Stojowski. The Signum Quartet follows with Leoš Janáček’s aptly titled String Quartet No. 2 “Intimate Letters,” a deeply personal work expressing longing, passion, and vulnerability. We bring the program to a dramatic conclusion with Tchaikovsky’s passionate fantasy overture “Romeo and Juliet,” performed by the Philharmonie Austin from Texas.
This Saturday evening at 8:00, tune in to “This Just In” on WHRO-FM, for dramatic contrasts, powerful emotions, and a romantic finale. You can also listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
