I had so much enjoyment putting together the duos show for The Best of Pickin on Friday night, that I decided to expand the idea onto the Sunday evening traditional Bluegrass Pickin program. Tune in to hear many of the founding stars of the genre like Flatt and Scruggs, Reno and Smiley, The Louvin Brothers, Jim and Jesse, and plenty of others including second generation stars like Tony Rice and Peter Rowan, Bill Emerson and Cliff Waldron, and The Osborne Brothers. Rice and Rowan appeared together at a concert in Chesapeake City Park when touring behind their 2007 release "Quartet." It was the second collaboration between the artists and featured Bryn Davies on bass and Sharol Gilchrist on mandolin. They covered several Rowan tunes on the album including " Dust Bowl Children" and also traditional tunes like "Shady Grove." We'll also have tracks from Dave Davis and The Warrior River Boys, Del McCoury, Bill Monroe, and plenty of others. Two hours of traditional Bluegrass on Pickin. Sunday night at 7 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
