This Saturday evening at 8:00 pm on WHRO-FM, host Raymond Jones has for you the latest classical releases in “This just in,” three hours of music celebrating the changing of season and harvest time.
We begin the evening with American composer Leo Sowerby’s solo organ work ‘Pageant of Autumn’ with organist Mark Dwyer on Richmond’s Raven Records label. This is a brilliant, colorful musical celebration of the season, with the organ used almost orchestrally. We continue our fall hike with the warm and rustic “Autumn” from Haydn’s oratorio “The Seasons,” under the baton of Sir Thomas Beecham. Then we turn to a somehow forgotten composer, 19th century German Emilie Mayer with her powerful and dramatic Symphony No. 1. Next is a more exuberant work by Tchaikovsky’s Concert Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra: rediscover this less familiar work with plenty of opportunities to showcase the virtuoso talent of Lukas Geniušas. We conclude the program with Sir John Rutter’s nature focused “Dancing Tree,” a cycle of musical settings of poems by Cornwall’s Charles Causley.
This Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, join Raymond Jones on “This Just In” for a three-hour program of new music as vibrant as autumn colors. You can also listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
