Tune in Sunday at 2:00pm on WHRO-FM, for “Feminine Fusion,” your weekly radio program celebrating the influence of women in classical music.
This week host Diane Jones continues her journey around the globe by looking to the South, and exploring music composed by women living in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ll hear pianist Luciana Soares performing the lively Suite No. 2 of Brazilian composer Adelaide Pereira da Silva. Then, we’ll head to the African continent, and music from South African composer Clare Loveday. We’ll enjoy her raw and edgy urban work “8 plus 1.” One more stop on the African continent will be in Nigeria with composer Ayo Bankole’s “Nigerian Suite.” This five-movement piece is a musical tour of the country blending folkloric rhythms with colorful modal elements. Across the Indian Ocean, we’ll land in Australia, with Elizabeth Younan’s cross-cultural and elegant “Fertile Crescent.” Our Southern sojourn’s final stop will be in New Zealand, with Gillian Whitehead’s “Waka’s Love,” a work that blends Māori storytelling, indigenous instruments and Western chamber music. We finish the trip with composer Salina Fisher and her luminous contemporary New-Zealand work, “Hikari.”
Listen to Feminine Fusion this Sunday at 2pm on WHRO-FM, and let Diane Jones guide you through music from vast and culturally diverse musical landscape of the Southern Hemisphere. You can also listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
