Catch some late-night Americana Friday when The Best of Pickin features an all-duo program. There will be a unique blend of both traditional artists like Jim and Jesse McReynolds, Flatt and Scruggs, The Osborne Brothers, and Reno and Smiley along with more progressive acts like The Wood Brothers, The Krueger Brothers, and The Civil Wars. Jim and Jesse McReynolds grew up in Coeburn, Virginia. Their grandfather recorded at the famed Bristol sessions and by 1960 they began issuing a series of singles that made them major stars on the Bluegrass circuit. Likewise, Sonny and Bobby Osborne were major players in the 60s and 70s. Their song" Rocky Top" is considered as one of the state songs for Tennessee. The Civil Wars were the duo of John Paul White and Joy Williams. Their 2011 debut album "Barton Hollow' won two grammy awards. It's an all duos program on The Best of Pickin. Friday night at 10 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
