European traditions throughout the centuries on ‘This Just In’

This Saturday evening at 8:00 pm on WHRO-FM, tune in to “This just in,” and discover some of the latest offerings from the classical music world throughout this three-hour program. This week host Raymond Jones guides us through Europe from the Baroque era to the 20^th century.
We begin the evening with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the lyrical “Poet and Peasant Overture” by Austrian composer Franz von Suppé. Next, we hear a piece that blends European origins with the cinematic language of Hollywood: Viennese composer Eric Korngold’s Violin Concerto, beautifully performed by soloist Paul Huang. From there we turn to a festive, carnival-inspired symphony about those donuts called “Fast-Nachts,” from Swiss composer Richard Flurry, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Then, with “The Well-Tempered Klavier,” Bach takes us in a different direction, toward reflection and contemplation, with selections from Book II played by pianist Christopher O’Riley. To conclude the evening on a spiritual note, we hear “The Canticle of All Creatures,” a work by English composer and major choral conductor Arthur Oldham, that praises nature’s elements, and ultimately life itself.
