For decades, playing brass instruments was considered “unseemly” for women, with the belief that it could make their faces look “unattractive.” This week, Diane Jones challenges those outdated notions with a dazzling lineup of performances by women who have made brass instruments their own. We begin the program with acclaimed English trumpeter soloist Alison Balsom, followed by Seraph Brass the all-female brass quartet and winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music. We also have on the lineup Carol Jantsch, Principal Tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the first woman to hold a principal tuba position in a major American orchestra.
