Tune in to WHRO-FM Saturday nights at 8:00 “This Just In” for the latest classical music releases. This week's program explores music of journeys and longing, moving from the mythical world of Pan to Schubert's restless Wanderer.
Join Raymond Jones and begin the evening with Jules Mouquet’s “The Flute of Pan,” in an evocation of ancient Greece, nature and mythology. Then, a reflection on the passage of time with “The Songs of Sunset” by Frederick Delius, in which nature and human emotion become intertwined. Change of scenery with Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s restless and dramatic Symphony No. 5. Next, the journey becomes virtuosic and outward-looking with soloist Isata Kanneh Mason performing the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 in C. To end the evening on a fantastical note, we enjoy Franz Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasy” as orchestrated by Franz Liszt, who amplifies its dramatic and symphonic qualities.
