To commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9-11, host Raymond Jones will not only present a program of music related to this tragic event, but he will also talk about this fateful morning at WHRO, how he came to realize the magnitude of the tragedy and how he reacted. Because we all remember where we were on that terrible day, tune in Friday the 11th at 9:00 for a special edition of “Evening classics,” and let’s remember together.
We begin this evening of remembrance with works written during years following the attacks. Inspired by the imagery and destructive force of fire, we hear Steven Bulla’s dramatic, powerful concert-band work “Firestorm,” followed by Timothy Mahr’s uplifting and lyrical “Into the Air.” From there, we turn to John Adams’ “On the Transmigration of Souls,” which received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Music. This monumental orchestral and choral memorial reflects on loss, memory, and the passage of souls. Then, we reflect on the fragility of human existence with Adolphus Hailstork’s “As Falling Leaves.” Written specifically in memory of those who died on September 11, Eric Ewazen’s “A Hymn For The Lost And The Living: In Memoriam 9/11/01” is a solemn but ultimately consoling memorial work. The program will conclude with Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 4 “Requiem,” a symphonic elegy written during World War II and a beautiful, poignant conclusion to the program centered on remembrance.
