Remembering 9/11 with women composers on ‘Feminine Fusion’

Tune in this Sunday at 2:00 pm for “Feminine Fusion,” your new weekly radio program celebrating the influence of women in classical music. Host Diane Jones explores the women that create, perform, or inspire throughout history and into the present day.
As we approach the 25^th anniversary of 9/11, Diane Jones has selected works by women composers inspired by the events of that day. Included on this week’s episode, three works expressing a broad range of emotions, offering different musical responses to the same trauma. Joan Tower’s dramatic and powerful “In Memory,” was written in memory of a friend who died that day and expresses various emotions. “September 11” from Lera Auerbach’s Violin Sonata No. 2, is a more personal and introspective work, written immediately after the attacks, as an almost instinctive response. Then, Karen Walwyn’s “Reflections on 9/11,” is a seven-movement musical reflection on the attacks and their aftermath. The work draws on a wide range of musical influences, including Chopin and Prokofiev, as well as Latin American, West African, and Chinese musical traditions.
