Musical heritage through centuries on ‘This Just In’

This week, Raymond Jones begins with by Carl Nielsen’s “Flute Concerto,” performed by the young and talented flutist Elizaveta Ivanova. Then, we travel back to the Renaissance with “Mass Christe Jesu” from 16^th century English composer William Rasar, offering a glimpse into the rich tradition of early English sacred music. From there, we move to the early 19th century with Beethoven’s famous Piano Sonata No. 31 performed by one of the greatest pianists of the 20^th century, the legendary Russian Sviatoslav Richter. Then we head to France with Debussy’s colorful “La Mer,” interestingly arranged for three musicians by British composer Sally Beamish and performed by Neave Trio (violin, cello, and piano).We conclude this program on a profoundly spiritual note with Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 2 – the “Resurrection Symphony” – performed by England’s Halle Orchestra, under the baton of Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong.
