This Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM tune in for “This Just In,” and let Raymond Jones guides you through three hours of new classical releases spanning three centuries. The program explores how composers have used the orchestra to capture changing times, places, and ideas, while Beethoven’s Fifth provides a monumental center of gravity.
We begin with Rick Sowash’s “A College Town Diary,” a vivid contemporary work that captures the bustling everyday life of a university community. Then, we move to mid-20th-century Britain with Richard Arnell’s energic overture “The New Age.” From there we travel to eastern Europe for Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s Symphony No. 4, led by fellow Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša. We then turn to Arnold Schoenberg’s richly dramatic symphonic poem “Pelleas and Melisande,” which was featured earlier this month on WHRO’s Saturday’s Opera segment. Next comes one of the great landmarks of the classical repertoire, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, beautifully performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa’s disciplined and powerful baton. To close the evening, we travel to the elegant French Baroque world of Sun King’s court (Louis the 14th) with some oboe music performed by Syntagma Amici and conducted by François Couperin.
