Rounding out August on Saturday opera, WHRO stays in Vienna and presents Johann Strauss II's “Die Fledermaus,” the undisputed masterpiece of Viennese operetta.
The sparkling comedy captures the elegance, wit and irresistible dance rhythms of the city during the golden age of the waltz. The story begins when Gabriel von Eisenstein is persuaded by his friend Dr. Falke to attend Prince Orlofsky's extravagant ball before serving a short prison sentence. Disguises, flirtations and misunderstandings quickly multiply as Eisenstein unknowingly courts his own wife, Rosalinde, while his maid Adele dreams of a life beyond domestic service. Filled with mistaken identities, practical jokes and champagne-fueled celebrations, Strauss's score overflows with vibrant waltzes, lively polkas and memorable ensembles, combining Viennese charm with dazzling orchestral brilliance and effortless comedy. Conductor Markus Poschner leads the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus with elegance, rhythmic vitality and sparkling energy, bringing out both the sophistication and festive spirit that have made Die Fledermaus an enduring holiday favorite.
