We start the evening with the energetic “Rebus Overture” by Frank Bridge performed by the BBC Philharmonic. Then, Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s powerful Symphony No. 3 is brilliantly performed by the Bamberg Symphony, led by the great Jakub Hrusa. Next, internationally acclaimed cellist Nina Kotova brings the Cello Sonata in d minor by Dmitri Shostakovich to life. From there, we turn to “A Hero’s Life” by Richard Strauss, with the Bavarian Radio Symphony in concert under the baton of Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa. To end the evening, we hear an orchestration of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 known as the “Hammerklavier” (literally “the hammer keyboard”), with The Orchestra Now from Bard College.
