Get Inspired with New Classical Releases on ‘This Just In’

Join Raymond Jones this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM for “This Just In," featuring three hours of outstanding new classical recordings from today’s finest artists and orchestras.
We begin with Igor Stravinsky’s sparkling “Divertimento from the Fairy’s Kiss,” performed by JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Next, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra presents Manuel de Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain,” an evocative work for piano and orchestra that captures the colors, fragrances, and mystery of Andalusia. Sir Thomas Beecham then leads a luminous performance of Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” the impressionist masterpiece. We also sample the rarely heard early songs of English composer Havergal Brian, performed by the Joyful Company of Singers, before turning to Bohuslav Martinů’s energetic Symphony No. 1, presented by the Bamberger Symphoniker, under the baton of Jakob Hrusa. French composer Mel Bonis is represented by her charming “Three Dances for Orchestra,” a delightful showcase of elegance, color, and rhythmic vitality. Then, pianist Arcadi Volodos brings warmth and poetic sensitivity to Robert Schumann’s “Scenes from Childhood,” one of the composer’s most beloved piano cycles. To close the program, we’ll hear the Entr'acte from Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s incidental music for “Nero,” a richly orchestrated gem from one of Britain's most gifted early twentieth-century composers.
