Claude Debussy’s ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’ from Teatro alla Scala in Milan

This haunting opera is set in a mysterious medieval kingdom and tells the story of the gentle Mélisande, whose growing love for her husband Golaud's half-brother, Pelléas, awakens jealousy and leads to heartbreaking tragedy. Debussy weaves a continuous, richly atmospheric score in which music and poetry blend seamlessly, creating an evocative and influential masterpiece.
The distinguished cast features soprano Sara Blanch, portraying Mélisande's mystery and innocence with remarkable sensitivity and grace. She’s joined by tenor Bernard Richter, who brings warmth and elegance to Pelléas’ emotional awakening. Mélisande's devoted but jealous husband Golaud is interpreted by baritone Simon Keenlyside, and Genevieve, Golaud’s mother and the compassionate matriarch of the family, is played by contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux.
