Join Raymond Jones this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM for ‘This Just In,’ three hours of new classical releases.
This week, be prepared to experience a record-breaking event as Raymond shares a true gem from England: a Heritage label release of Havergal Brian’s colossal and visionary Gothic Symphony, played and sung by more than 700 performers. The legendary 1980 BBC Proms performance from Royal Albert Hall features Ole Schmidt conducting a massive ensemble of approximately 158 instrumentalists and 555 singers from a distinguished collection of choral groups including the London Symphony Chorus, London Philharmonic Choir, BBC Singers and others. After this overwhelmingly majestic symphony, we go back to a more serene atmosphere with Sir Thomas Beecham and the French National Radio Orchestra in Faure’s poetic “Pavane.” Then, we take a step on the fiery and passionate side, with Manuel de Falla’s ballet “El amor brujo” (Love, the Magician). To close the program, we hear a virtuosic solo piano work, “Spells” by Aldo Lopez-Gavilan, performed by the composer himself.
Tune in for “This Just In" and enjoy a monumental work brought to life by several hundred performers, as well as pieces of extraordinary color, character, and invention.
