Wrap Up Your Holiday Weekend on The Acoustic Highway

Photo by Travis Walser on Unsplash.com

Extend your Fourth of July festivities by one day by tuning in to hear acoustic artists and their songs all celebrating the USA. There will be tracks from Simon and Garfunkel, John Denver, local artists Tret Fure and Ron Fetner, along with Bruce Sringsteen, Woody Guthrie and plenty of others. The John Denver track "American Child" is from the 1980 album "Autograph" which came out after Denver's career had peaked in the mid-1970s- his final number one album "Windsong" had been issued in 1975. However, Autograph has been rediscovered by Denver fans with the renewed interest in his music, largely fueled by "Take Me Home Country Roads" being the anthem for the US Men's National Soccer Team and played at stadiums during the World Cup. It's all about the USA on this edition of the Acoustic Highway. Sunday night at 9 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
