Saturday July 27, WHRO-FM invites you to experience a jewel of the Baroque opera repertoire, Georg Friedrich Handel’s “Ariodante.” Filled with passion, deception, and triumph, this work reveals Handel’s extraordinary ability to transform human emotions into unforgettable melodies, combining dramatic storytelling with some of the most expressive arias of the 18th century. “Ariodante” is the story of a noble knight who is deeply in love with Ginevra, the daughter of the King of Scotland. Their happiness is threatened by Polinesso, a jealous and ambitious courtier who tricks Ariodante into believing that Ginevra has been unfaithful. Devastated, Ariodante falls into despair, but the truth is eventually revealed.
The production features a distinguished cast, including mezzo-soprano Cecilia Molinari as Ariodante, sopranos Jacquelyn Stucker as Ginevra and Sabine Devieilhe as Dalinda, and countertenor Christophe Dumaux as Polinesso.
The Paris Opera’s production of Handel’s “Ariodante” reveals the emotional depth of this great Baroque opera. Under the direction of Jean-Claude Mullet and the musical leadership of Raphaël Pichon, a remarkable cast brings to life a story of love, betrayal, and redemption, where Handel’s dazzling arias illuminate the inner struggles of each character.
