All About Dad on Pickin and the Acoustic Highway

Herman R Graham in front of his first restored 1929 Model A

It's all about DAD on this week's Pickin and Acoustic Highway. We'll pay tribute on Pickin with cds all from the collection of my dad- Herman R Graham Sr., whose vast collection of Bluegrass music is now a part of the WHRO library. We'll hear from Blue Highway, Bill Monroe, The Bluegrass Album Band, and plenty of others. Also, on The Acoustic Highway, we honor dad with tracks from Greg Winkler, David Mallet, Cat Stevens, and local musician Joe France. Also, we'll continue our PRIDE month feature, with music from Texas based musician Crys Mathews, Janis Ian, and Ani Di Franco. And, finally, with Sunday being the official arrival of summer, we'll celebrate the summer solstice and the longest day of the year with songs about summer from Garnett Rogers, Scott Kirby, and regional artists Tret Fure, Mike Aiken, and Dhana Rowe. Pick up the phone and call dad- tell him how much you appreciate him and tune in. Pickin starts at 7 and the Highway at 9 on 89.5 WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
