The Freshest Classical Releases are on ‘This Just In’

Looking for new classical releases? Tune in every Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, for “This Just In.” Raymond Jones presents three hours of fresh recordings, carefully selected to guide you through the latest additions to the classical music world.
This Saturday, let’s begin with four works from a new recording by Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa, a recent performer in the Virginia Arts Festival chamber series. From there, we’ll dive into Frederick Delius’ “Two Pieces for Small Orchestra – On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring and Summer Night on the River,” with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the Royal Philharmonic of London. We’ll then continue our riverside journey with the remarkable Kanneh-Mason family, whose unique musical bond shines through in Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet. Next, we'll shift to the turbulent realities of the twentieth century with the Shostakovich Symphony No. 10, conducted by Santtu-Mathias Rouvali.  The program concludes on a lighter note with the sweeping Romanticism of Sergei Bortkiewicz’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat, featuring a dazzlingly virtuosic performance by pianist Anna Shelest.
