Red Clay Strays on The Best of Pickin

Catch late night Americana this Friday night with music from The Red clay Strays. The band from Mobile, Alabama began getting traction in 2023 on social media, and They just released their third album entitled " Grateful." Also, music from the Holler Choir, The Kitchen Dwellers, Danny Burns, as well as traditional tracks from Larry Sparks (who is featured on Sunday's Pickin) Lynn Morris, and the legendary duo Reno and Smiley. Danny Burns is originally from Donegal, Ireland. His latest release "Southern Skies" features some of the greats in Bluegrass and Country Music including Tim O Brien, Ricky Skaggs, and Vince Gill. We'll also have some tracks from regional musicians Mercy Creek, and The Gurleys. Check out late night Americana on The Best of Pickin. Friday night at 10 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
