This Saturday, WHRO-FM continues the WFMT Opera Series with a broadcast from the Vienna State Opera: Beethoven’s “Fidelio.” Tune in at 1 p.m. to hear this powerful story of moral struggle and the triumph of freedom over oppression.
This Vienna State Opera production stars soprano Malin Byström in the title role of Leonore, a woman of deep loyalty who disguises herself as a prison guard named “Fidelio” to rescue her husband Florestan from political imprisonment. Florestan is interpreted by tenor David Butt Philip, whose prison monologue becomes the emotional core of the opera. Baritone Christopher Maltman stars as the cold and ruthless Don Pizarro who plans to secretly kill Florestan to cover up his crimes. Don Fernando, who ultimately restores order, is played by bass Simonas Strazdas, embodying calm control and moral certainty. The distinguished cast also includes Tareq Nazmi, Kathrin Zukowski, Daniel Jenz, Daniel Lökös and Panajotis Pratsos. Maestro Franz Welser-Möst leads the Vienna State Opera Orchestra & Chorus.
