This Saturday at 8 p.m., join Raymond Jones for “This Just In” on WHRO-FM, your weekly guide to staying up to date with the latest classical releases.
This week, Raymond Jones has lined up for you a program of large-scale orchestral works from the late-Romantic orchestral tradition, performed by some of today’s prominent artists.
First, listen to one of the most profound and intense violin concertos ever written with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring Ukrainian violinist Aleksey Semenenko. Then, a total change of scenery will lead you to the Sunshine state through the dreamy and impressionistic landscapes of the “Florida Suite” by Frederick Delius, performed by the Royal Philharmonic of London, under the direction of Sir Thomas Beecham. Next, step into the romantic side with Edward MacDowell’s evocative symphonic poem “Lancelot and Elaine,” inspired by the Arthurian tale. Finally, Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 8, nicknamed “Symphony of a Thousand”, performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, chorus and soloists conducted by Semyon Bychkov, will bring the evening to an uplifting conclusion.
Join Raymond Jones for an evening of remarkable performances across more than a century of symphonic masterworks. Tune in to “This Just In" Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, or online through our Media Player for a night of unforgettable musical journeys.
