All Covers on The Best of Pickin

This week's Best of Pickin features all cover tunes with artists performing classic tracks from The B52s, John Denver, Billy Joel, The Beatles and plenty of others. We'll hear The Irish Bluegrass Band Jig jam, who released their version of the Dolly Parton classic" Jolene" as a single in 2022. The band made its Grand Ole Opry Debut in 2023 to critical acclaim and have been hailed as one of the best Irish Bluegrass bands performing today. Also, Trey Hensley is joined by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in a cover of The Band's "Up on Cripple Creek." And legendary duo Bill Emerson and Cliff Waldron are featured in a version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain." Stay up and sing-along, you know you want to! The Best of Pickin airs Friday night at 10 on 89.5

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
