‘El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego’ by Gabriela Lena Frank – Live from the Met on WHRO-FM

This Saturday, don’t miss the last live opera broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025-26 season with the network premiere of “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego – The Last Dream of Frida and Diego” – by Gabriela Lena Frank, recent winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Music. This vibrant opera imagines a magical reunion between the iconic Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, whose relationship was famously stormy in real life, exploring themes of love, loss, ambition, and the limits of human desire.
Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell.
American Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard stars as Frida, whose death has separated her from her physical and emotional pain, but also from her art. Spanish Baritone Carlos Álvarez is Diego, who calls to his beloved on the Day of the Dead as he approaches the end of his own life. Soprano Gabriella Reyes plays Catrina, the imperious but mischievous guardian of the dead. German countertenor Nils Wanderer makes his network broadcast debut as Leonardo, an actor whose devotion to his art inspires Frida. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met Orchestra and Chorus in Frank’s dynamic, colorful score.
Acclaimed American composer Gabriela Lena Frank makes her Met debut with her first opera, featuring a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, a must-hear event that will inspire listeners around the world.
Join us Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM or listen online, for a vibrant new opera production featuring rich and colorful music, live from the Met.
