Each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, “This Just In” brings you three hours of the latest classical releases you don’t want to miss.
This week, Raymond Jones has for you two pieces performed by the composers themselves: Earl Miller’s “Organ Improvisations in Three Movements”, a rare, virtuosic and historically significant demonstration of spontaneous composition, captured live on an American symphonic pipe organ. Then, enjoy the vibrant, three-movement concerto “Emporium for Piano and Orchestra” with its acclaimed Cuban composer Aldo López-Gavilán at the keyboard, alongside conductor Michael Butterman and the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra.
Let’s step back briefly to 2025 to celebrate composer Arvo Pärt’s 90th birthday with his “Credo” conducted by Paavo Järvi, Pärt’s lifelong friend. Next, we’ll hear the monumentally scaled, 25-minute orchestral masterpiece, Chaconne in d minor by late-Romantic Austrian composer Franz Schmidt.
Our last stop will be in the Czech Republic, with the Symphony No. 6 by Gustav Mahler played by the Czech Philharmonic under conductor Semyon Bychkov. The Czech Philharmonic holds a deeply authentic cultural connection to the composer, as Mahler was born and raised in Bohemia and premiered his own Seventh Symphony in Prague.
Don’t miss out on these exciting classical music releases! Tune in to “This Just In" Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online for a night full of powerful and emotional new performances.
