Autism Resources for Parents and Educators

April is Autism Awareness Month, and we've curated some resources that educators and caregivers can use to help children on the autism spectrum thrive.

TV & Streaming Resources

This month PBS KIDS is highlighting Autism Acceptance Month with new episodes of Carl the Collector and a new episode from Work It Out Wombats.

Watch Carl the Collector and Work It Out Wombats on PBS Kids online, or explore the schedule to see when it airs on WHRO TV 15 or WHRO Kids.

The Life Autistic Documentary & Collection of Digital Shorts
Meet twelve people of different ages and backgrounds, along with their families and caregivers, to understand the daily lives and future prospects of people with autism. Their stories explore diagnosis, early intervention, family life, treatment, education, employment, and independent living.

Online Learning Resources

Carl the Collector Collection
In PBS KIDS’ first series centering on an autistic main character, Carl and his friends work and play together to discover what makes each of us who we are—and just as importantly, what makes each person unique.

Jack’s Autism Journey
Iowa PBS began recording footage of Jack at three years old, just prior to his autism diagnosis in 2006, and updated his autism story in 2009 when he was six years old. Today, Jack is a 15-year-old student in Iowa making progress typing on various communication devices and working on becoming more verbal.

Autism: Creating Special Times for Everyone
This collection of documents from Sesame Street in Communities includes event planning, group activities, coloring sheets, and talking points for explaining autism to young children.

Home and Family Strategies for Children with Autism
With the help of his mother, Brandon demonstrates how rotating activities help him to apply the different strategies that he learned during early intervention.
