Suites, Symphonies and More on ‘This Just In’

SARAH KANE PHOTOGRAPHYYY

This Saturday at 8 p.m., join Raymond Jones for “This Just In” on WHRO-FM, your weekly guide to staying up to date with the latest classical releases.

The program opens with another selection from the Warner Classics box set devoted to the stereo recordings of Sir Thomas Beecham. This week, we’ll hear Ludwig van Beethoven’s incidental music to “The Ruins of Athens,” performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beecham Choral Society, a lively and theatrical score that shows Beethoven at his most colorful.

Richmond-based cellist Juliana Soltis returns to the program with one of the cornerstone works of the cello repertoire: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No. 4. These suites remain a benchmark for any cellist, and Soltis brings her own voice to music that continues to define the instrument.

From there, we move into the symphonic world with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 “Titan,” performed by the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov. This recording is part of a recent Pentatone release exploring Mahler’s symphonic work.

We’ll also hear music by Alma Mahler, with her “Five Songs” performed by soprano Catharina Kroeger and pianist Monica Lonero. And from the local scene, organist and composer Daniel Sanez performs his own piece “Revelation,” recorded at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and released on the Richmond-based label Raven Records.

Save the date for this Saturday, April 18, at 8:00 p.m., and join Raymond Jones for “This Just In” on WHRO-FM 90.3 or online.
