New Music on The Best of Pickin

This week's Best of Pickin features new music from Trey Hesley and his" Can't Outrun the Blues" release and Daniel Grindstaff and The Uptown Troubadours new self-titled album. Hensley has been performing for the past ten years with Robbie Ickes, who helped launch Blue Highway, one of the most popular Americana Bands on today's circuit. Trey Hensley was a child prodigy, playing the Grand Ole Opry at age 11 with country legend Marty Stuart. He would go on to perform with Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Ricky Skaggs, and plenty of other Bluegrass greats. Tom T. Hall produced Hensley's first album. This solo release forges the divide between traditional bluegrass and acoustic music. Also, new music from Daniel Grindstaff and the Uptown Troubadours. And, music from Palmyra, Alison Krauss, and the Lone Bellows, who are coming to town as a part of the Virginia Arts Festival. and, we'll have traditional tracks from Hazel Dickens, The Lonesome River Band, and Cliff Waldron. Your Easter Weekend kicks off with wonderful Americana Music on the Best of Pickin. Friday night at 10 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
