Explore New Classical Releases This Saturday on ‘This Just In’

Check out three hours of new classical releases each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM with “This Just In,” made possible by your continued support as a listener and member.

This week, host Raymond Jones brings you Sergei Prokofiev’s "Lieutenant Kijé Suite," performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Alpesh Chauhan. Recorded live in Aberdeen, this performance comes from a recent BBC Music Magazine release and captures perfectly the color of Prokofiev’s score.

From the Warner Classics box set devoted to the stereo recordings of Sir Thomas Beecham, we’ll hear music from Georges Bizet’s “L’Arlésienne,” performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Another example of Beecham’s distinctive elegance in the French repertoire.

We continue our orchestral journey with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Gianandrea Noseda.

Also, on the program is Margaret Brower’s “Rhapsody – Concerto for Orchestra,” performed by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop. This newly revised version expands on her earlier “Rhapsody for Orchestra,” taking the listener through a wide range of moods, from reflective and lyrical to playful and even a bit unpredictable in its final moments.

Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online, this and every Saturday at 8 p.m. for “This Just In.” And thank you, as always, for your generous support during our membership drive.
