Continuing Our All-Female Artist Feature on The Best of Pickin

The Best of Pickin continues its celebration of Women's History Month with a full program of all female artists. We'll have a wide range of artists-from the early performers who forged a path when the genre was dominated by all male stars to current musicians who continue to redefine the genre. We'll hear from Loretta Lynn, June Carter Cash, and Dolly Parton, who were among the earliest of female artists who got airplay in country music. Also, music from the new generation of performers- Siera Hull, Alison Krauss, Molly Tuttle, and plenty of others, including the dynamic trio of "I'm With Her"- Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan. The group just won a Best Folk Album Grammy for their 2025 release" Wild and Clear and Blue." Sure, Spring has officially arrived (as of Friday morning.) But there's plenty of warmer days and nights ahead to venture out- so stay in and enjoy great Americana Music on The Best of Pickin. Friday night 10-12 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
