All Female Artists on This Week's Best of Pickin

Music legend Hazel Dickens
Music legend Hazel Dickens

The weekend kicks off on WHRV with The Best of Pickin's second show in honor of Women's History Month, with a feature of all female artists. We'll hear a unique blend of both current musicians like Sierra Hull, Alison Krauss, Becky Buller, and Rhona Vincent who are reshaping the music, as well as those incredible artists who helped launch it- including Hazel Dickens, who hailed from the coalfields of West Virginia and became a true pioneer of mountain music. We'll also hear from country music pioneers Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette, as well as the fantastic trio of Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O Donovan, and Sarah Watkins. Why try to figure out what kind of weather you'd be heading out into? (could be 75 degrees- could be snowing...) Stay in and check out The Best of Pickin. Friday night at 10 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
