Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3 this Saturday at 1 p.m. for a live broadcast of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” marking the return of the Metropolitan Opera’s live Saturday matinee transmissions after the February break.
Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak stars as Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly, a young Japanese woman who gives up her family and her former life as a geisha to marry an American naval officer, believing their union to be true and lasting love. Tenor Adam Smith makes his Met broadcast debut as Lieutenant Pinkerton, who views the marriage as little more than a temporary arrangement.
The cast also features mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano as Suzuki, Butterfly’s loyal companion, and baritone Quinn Kelsey as Sharpless, the compassionate American consul in Nagasaki. Conductor Carlo Rizzi leads the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Puccini’s deeply emotional score, filled with some of the composer’s most memorable melodies like “Un bel dì, vedremo” or the humming chorus “Coro a bocca chiusa.”
Don’t miss this powerful live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera, Saturday at 1 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 or online.
