Celebrating Women's History Month on The Best of Pickin

Tune in for late night Americana on Friday with music from some of the female greats of the genre as we celebrate Women's History month. We'll hear from icons like Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, and Emmy Lou Harris, as well as new artists like Sierra Ferrell, Sarah Jarosz, Molly Tuttle, and Neko Case who are continuing to reshape the music. Also, tracks from true veterans like Hazel Dickens and Wilma Lee Cooper, who were staples on the Bluegrass circuit during its earliest years. Wilma Lee Cooper was a part of a duo with her husband Stoney Cooper and were regulars at the Grand Old Opry beginning in 1957. In 1974, she was named The First lady of Bluegrass by the Smithsonian Institution. Wonderful female artists of the genre. It's the Best of Pickin. Friday night at 10 on 89.5 WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
